This article studies Thai adventure short stories which were very popular during
1940s to the early of 1960s as the consequences of exploration of wilderness for
modernization and foreign investment in road construction and timber industry or the
popularity of hunting which became a new recreational activity for city people. The
narrative of wilderness was always presented as adventure stories or mysterious legends
consisting of crypto beasts, mythical humans, amulets, talismans and charms. The
wilderness was also seen as the natural resource and bandit’s den. It is noteworthy that
women in these Thai adventure short stories were characterized either as a pure and
innocent object evoking lust in men or as a charming and mysterious object valuable to be
sought and possessed. These characteristics were the causes of tragic incident in the story.

This article aims to explore violence in one of the most popular Thai literary works,
Krai Thong in order to illustrate the significance of literary text as supporting evidence of
violence in society. Violence in Krai Thong can be divided into three main categories: direct
violence, structural violence and cultural violence. All of them are the consequences of
binary opposition between “we” and ‘they” which is originally based on the difference in
race and gender of the characters. The existence of countless versions Krai Thong indicates
that the structural violence has deep-rooted in Thai society and cultural violence is used as
an excuse of various kind of violence.
