- All the benefits that married persons enjoy with
regard to beneficial immigrant status have been extended

to same-sex partners.
- And the courts developed the common law by

extending the spouseûs action for loss of support where a
partner is unlawfully killed or injured to partners in
permanent same-sex life relationships.

The pinnacle of this progression was reached on 30

November 2006 when the Deputy President of South
Africa signed into law a statute that legalized same-sex
unions as full marriages. This legislation was passed in

response to court decisions requiring equality for same-

sex partners in marriage.
