give up. She decided to file another complaint to Chiang Mai court for
proof of her father’s death. The evidence shows that her father was
innocent and the police should re-investigate the case, but she never
received any further response from these organizations.
“My father was the first corpse. If I don’t rise up and fight, there
will be another one. As a descendent of this community, I had to
demand justice for the community even though I also had to fight my
own fear of different influences. If I didn’t do it, the villagers would
be bullied even more.”
Today, the villagers rely on Khatima for assistance in the
violations of plantation and housing rights.
From Khatima’s perspective, land is important to the life of all
villagers. Without the plantations, many serious problems will arise.
These include migration to the city to sell their labor-power, and risks
of becoming the victims of human trafficking and labor exploitation.
Land security is therefore crucial for achieving stability in human life
“In the past, the villagers had never demanded individual title
deeds because ultimately they could be lost. Instead, we want a
communal title deed that belongs to the community, which cannot be
bought or sold. This is to prevent the land from falling into the hands
of capitalists. The villagers want to have community land tenure so
that they can live on and farm the land without fear.”
Since 2014, the policy to increase forest cover has adversely
affected indigenous tribal peoples across the country. Many
communities were arrested for trespassing and destroying forests
on the land where they live since the ancestral times. This kind of
