had to become the witnesses as they saw the incidence. One woman
said, “Villagers who are witnesses are scared. Everyday when I go fishing,
I don’t know whether I will be able to return to my children. I catch
fishes with my bare hands. Then, I sell them. My income is more than
300 baht a day. It is enough to take care of my family. If the power
plant is built and villagers have to be relocated, I don’t have anywhere
else to live.”
“We have gone everywhere in order to demand justice including,
the government, the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand,
the United Nations. We presented the research of local scholars, which
found that the power plant would generate large amount of pollu-
tion. Until today, we have never seen the EIA report of the Electricity
Generating Authority. Even though the cabinet has not agreed to the
building of Thepha power plant, but private organizations start to
build the seaport. Piling caused the sea to be muddy so the villagers
cannot do the fishing for many months. They have never received any
compensation.”
As women human rights and environment defenders, women
thought that her struggle is an honest fight. “Actually, women’s struggle
and men’s struggle are similar. I think women have more rights than
men because her struggle is “sincere.” Nobody can force them. When
women love, we love seriously. This is the same for me. I just want to
protect our home and our sea for the next generation.”
Therefore, Pak Bang villagers and every members of the
network will keep fighting until we win. That means the cancellation of
the coal-fired power plant in our area because this village is our home
and our treasure that must preserved for our children.
Currently, the women human rights defenders from Pakbang
village and the network around the country still oppose to the
building of power plant, which affects the livelihoods of everyone in
the community with courage and strong willpower.
