“Women and housewives in the proposed site of the coal-fired
power plant had a direct experience from thee 60-megawatt lignite
power plant. They fully recognized the potential impacts of a coal-fired
power plant that is 15 times larger than the existing power plant,” said
“Jindarat Permlarbwiroo,” the coordinator of Save Andaman From Coal
network.
“The fisher folks also show resistance because the women
know how important fishery is to their survival. The sea is their treasure.
They know their lives and stomachs rely on the sea. When the sea is
damaged, it simply means a destruction of their treasure.”
The impacts of the coal-fired power plant in Krabi will not only
affect Krabi but also other areas that share the ecosystems because
nobody can set the boundary for water and sky.
“Women in our network are audacious. They dare to speak.
They dare to take action. They have no fear. Women are usually on
the frontline because we know they do not dare to harm women. This
is our strength to fight and to protect our rights to land.”
“Jindarat” stated that the members, both men and women,
have overcome their fear so they decide to fight and to pressure
the government to halt the coal-fired power plant proposal. As an
alternative, they offer a concept called “Krabi Go Green” to promote
renewable energy in Krabi as the province has the potential to
generate as much as 1,700 megawatts of renewable energy.
With the power of people, women and men, she hopes for the
end of coal-fired power plant project.
